Clint Jukkala's paintings …

Medium
Painting
Clint Jukkala
American, b. 1971

In his luminous, textured paintings and mixed-media works on paper, Clint Jukkala explores contradictions—between abstraction and representation; flatness and depth; intimacy and vastness; and solidity and transparency. His compositions range from jewel-like to monumental and almost always include a portal, set prominently in the center of the picture plane or slightly off to the side. These portals take the shape of rectangular doorframes or oversized, cartoonish eyes, which seem to stare back at the viewer, upending the relationship between the art object (looked at) and the viewer (looking). They frame pictures within his pictures, and often seem to lead into sea- and landscapes that appear both intimate and infinite. Though Jukkala’s works are abstract, he thinks of them as still lifes, interiors, and landscapes, which include forms that suggest robots, video game graphics, cartoon characters, and buildings.
