About Corinne Wasmuht

In her large-scale oil-on-wood works, Corinne Wasmuht paints several images atop one another, resulting in near-abstract compositions. A participant in the 2011 Venice Biennale, Wasmuht begins by selecting photographs from both her collection and the internet. She then whitewashes and polishes wooden boards in preparation for the layers of paint that accumulate as she recreates the photographs on top of each other. The images bring a narrative quality to the painting, but the layering flattens them out, eliminating any sense of depth. Discernable objects disintegrate into fields of colors and shapes, and figures shift into abstract forms. The overall composition has a lustrous quality from the initial polishing.
