About Cristina Lei Rodriguez

Cristina Lei Rodriguez is known for making richly textured sculptures from hardened, resin-coated plastic and textile materials. Inspired by the nearly tropical climate of her native Miami, Rodriguez covered the large tree-like assemblages in her 2007 “Overrun” series with artificial foliage and metallic paint, evoking an out-of-control tropical forest. The surrounding urban environment also figures in Rodriguez’s work, as evidenced by Abandoned (2007), a diorama depicting a mound of brushwood on a foam base reminiscent of the oil- and garbage-strewn grasslands around Miami. “This antithetic sense that prevails in her work,” critic Janet Batet wrote, “may be summarized by the following dialogical pairs: organic forms versus geometric forms; natural element versus synthetic element; abstract character versus referential sense; macro versus micro scale; glamour versus decadence; creation versus destruction.”
