The Journal of Contemporary Photography features hand-pulled photogravure images from many of the world's most highly respected contemporary photographers. Each gravure is made by Jon Goodman, the modern master of the process. These images are combined with brilliant criticism, poetry, and fiction from many of the world's most acclaimed writers. Not since Alfred Stieglitz's Camera Work has there been such attention to beauty, such incisive criticism, and such an articulate melding of visual and literary points of view. Each volume is both an object of beauty and a fine art investment.

Volume IV, entitled The Gardens of DeCosse, focuses exclusively on the beautiful works of Cy DeCosse.
His elegant compositions range from the quiet of morning light falling on freshly picked vegetables to the riotous energy of flowers in full bloom. Literary contributors include fiction writer Scott Ely; gallery director John Stevenson; poet Susan Ludvigson; musician and scholar Carol Wood; and editor John Wood.

Photogravure Signed and Number by the Artist. Cy brings his background of artist and art director to the art of photogaphy. His love of photography began in Florence, Italy as a Fulbright student. His learning continued as he collaborated with many of America’s best photographers in his career as an agency Art Director. Cy believes in close, intimate images that show ordinary things in a surprising new light. He paints backgrounds that “float” the subject in a world of its own. Alternative processes give his images a look that is different and approriate to the moment. He has said that his eye has always been drawn to “the little things that people miss.” Most often, these include fruit, vegetables, and flowers, which he finds at markets in the U.S. and Europe, among other places. Letting the subject of his photographs guide the process he uses to print them, DeCosse works with three principal methods: platinum, in which light-sensitive platinum salts are mixed into the emulsion that coats the paper, resulting in rich black-and-white images that seem almost three-dimensional; gum dichromate, a 19th-century technique that sits between painting and photography and that results in full color, painterly photographs; and photogravure, which crosses printmaking with photography to produce prints based on a photographic negative.
