From the series Artscape Gibraltar Point Artist's Residency :
Situated in a haunted school house on Toronto Islands, Artscape Gibraltar Point Artist's Residency became my retreat for the month of October, 2016. Here I collected natural pigments from the hollyhocks, dandelions, clay and sumac which I used in this series of oil paintings on linen. The blacks in the paintings are partly from willow charcoal that I made myself in the fires I'd have alone every night. Being isolated for so long I found I accessed a part of myself that I hadn't since I was a child. I was hearing voices and imagining things as I went through the woods and dark hallways of the school house carrying plant and art materials. I spent one day in the bushes making a willow basket. Other days I set out and painted the boats and plants near Trout pond or the long autumn grasses in the wind. I was playing make believe games and painting horses and school girls. I learned a lot about myself and the extent of my fears and how to face them and feel these paintings reflect that.
