Darren Coffield, ‘Horn Player (after Poussin's Triumph of David)’, 2017, Dellasposa

Raising fundamental questions and drawing historic parallels to how we see and perceive ourselves against the backdrop of film and media, Coffield has an interest in the field of human cognition. His work subverts the viewer’s instinctive faculties for reading the apparently familiar to create stimulating and provocative paintings.

The present drawing is a study the artist created, using India ink on paper, after Poussin’s 'Triumph of David’ (1631-33), which hangs in the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Coffield’s drawing forms a much larger series of monumental paintings, entitled Black Rain, that blends contemporary portraiture and classical genre paintings in one tableau. This disrupts the viewer’s expectations by having to piece together the image, with its own constituent elements, now distorted through the lens of memory and relational perspective. For Coffield, we experience the world through an elasticity of time.

Presented in a vintage black box frame.
