Dave Young Kim, ‘Magpie Han’, 2017, KANG CONTEMPORARY

"This painting depicts the character for my mom's maiden last name from her father, my grandfather. Being the only male, of 7 female cousins, and having taken on my dad's last name Kim, the surname Han in this lineage will die with my mother's generation. The magpie traditionally is the bearer of good news. Ironically I hope for good news upon my family while at the same time it isn't good news that the family name Han will end in my lifetime."
