This poster was produced by the Royal Opera House, London in 1992 when they presented Richard Strauss's Die Frau Ohne Schatten with sets by David Hockney. David's image of the shadowless, sorrowful Empress is haunting and beautiful. The lettering at the base of the poster was also created by the artist.The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, have one of these posters in their Theatre and Performance Collection ( museum number S.869-1995 in their catalogue.)

Perhaps the most influential artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso may be best known for pioneering Cubism and fracturing the two-dimensional picture plane in order to convey three-dimensional space.
