About David Lamelas

In the 1960s and ‘70s, David Lamelas, along with Minimalist artists like Dan Flavin and Fred Sandback, abandoned traditional definitions of sculpture. Appropriating tools and techniques of the film and television industries, Lamelas began to create projection pieces that used news and pure information as content. His work Office of Information about the Vietnam War at Three Levels: The Visual Image, Text, and Audio (1968) helped establish the now-common practice of using news footage and documentation of current events as integral components in installation projects. In a 2004 exhibition, Lamelas presented Límite de una Proyección, a reductive take on cinema that used a spotlight to separate the exhibition space into two zones: light and dark.
