About David Noonan

David Noonan transforms his extensive photographic collection of avant-garde theater and dance performances from the 1960s and ’70s, found archival documents, magazines, carpets, and antique books into large-scale silk-screened tableaux and fabric collages. Often favoring rough fabrics, patched and folded, reflecting the age of the images that are printed on them, he also superimposes images of plants, animals, and architecture atop these performative documents. The textiles themselves contain patterns that refer to Japanese textiles and other ancient textile-making techniques. Noonan’s subjects strike theatrical and grandiloquent poses, a theme that recurs in his cutout silhouettes attached to paneled, figurative sculptures.
