Davide Cantoni transforms documentary images pulled from contemporary news sources into delicate drawings and paintings that explore the transitory nature of daily news and collective history. In his “Burn Drawings,” Cantoni renders photos from The New York Times in pencil, then burns small holes into the paper by directing sunlight through a magnifying glass. This intimate and invasive method of erasure leaves the drawings and their narrative origins incomplete, inconclusive, and frail. Similarly, Cantoni’s “White Paintings” serve as pearly monochrome doubles of the appropriated images. Ghostly forms of injured civilians and triumphant soldiers are barely visible in the colorless compositions, which effectively question the authoritative nature of contemporary media.
