Deborah Turbeville expanded fashion photography’s horizons beyond its mercantile remit, into an ethereal, highly charged mix of portraiture, architecture, and landscape. Her works’ abiding theme is the self and its representation, in all its multiplicity and fragmentation, within the frame of the photograph: “Feeling surreal and dislocated—it’s my favorite way to feel,” said Turbeville. Channeling the maestros of art cinema – Cocteau, Resnais, and Tarkovsky - she saturates her photographs in a romantic, yet ironic atmosphere that is both highly sensual and moodily psychological.
