About Debra Scacco

“Yes, art is about issues and critical debate; but it is also about life,” says Debra Scacco in reference to her unabashedly personal drawings, sculptures, and installations. She explores “longing, vulnerability, insecurity,” and other such universal human experiences through her art. Her delicate works are shaped by sentiments pulled from her own diaries, and reflect her fears, desires, memories, and experiences growing up in an Italian-American family and living in various cities in the United States and abroad. Scacco works in series, often allowing chance to play a part in an otherwise orderly process. In the “Promise Works” series, for example, she watches ink spread across a page and then writes repeating phrases from her diary onto the resulting abstract patterns in her own delicate hand. These pieces address her fears of the future.
