Dedy Sufriadi, ‘Saturday Night’, 2015, Ode to Art

About Dedy Sufriadi

Dedy Sufriadi’s energetic paintings layer abstract forms, charged phrases, and floating symbols in allover, expressionistic compositions. Through a process that merges concentrated study with stream-of-consciousness response, he pairs philosophical and pop-cultural texts with symbols spontaneously triggered by the excerpted passages. Sufriadi describes his work as a means to explore the interplay between “intelligence and intuition,” as demonstrated by the combination of scrawled existentialist theory texts and doodle-like drawings in his paintings. The large-scale canvases, built from acrylic and pen, recall the work of neo-expressionist painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julian Schnabel.
