Deedra Ludwig, ‘Nocturne’, 2017, LeMieux Galleries

Rather than re-creating a literal landscape on canvas or paper, I aim to express its “essence” in a rich and complex form of delicately painted organic subjects that float and trail across the surface. Fragmentary plant forms drift within color fields, at times receding into pool-like depths, and at others buoyed by surrounding luminescence that seems to rise out of the color and project beyond the surface. This is only partly a visual effect, as I regularly incorporate actual plant forms into the work by embedding them in thin layers of resin and pigments. On some level they are entombed, becoming specimens in the truest sense of the word.
