Dennis Stock, ‘James Dean (New York City)’, 1955, Magnum Photos

Stock is responsible for many of the defining images of James Dean. In 2005, on the fiftieth anniversary of Dean’s tragic death, Stock published his many portraits of the actor in a critically acclaimed book.

Reproducing the original without alteration and enlarged to a 16"x20" paper size, these Magnum Contacts offer a unique insight into the methods by which our photographers produced some of their best known images, by clearly showing the sequence of frames and the marks of the editing process on each sheet.

About Dennis Stock

Following his service in the United States Army, Dennis Stock began an apprenticeship with Life photographer Gjon Mili and subsequently won the first prize in the publication's Young Photographers contest. Best known for his portraits of James Dean and jazz musicians like Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington, Stock produced a diverse oeuvre—from photographs of California hippies in the 1960s to images of modern architecture in the 1990s to later work focused on abstract flowers.
