Despina Stokou, ‘Untitled’, 2016, ICI: Benefit Auction 2017

“Ms Stokou’s loquacious, streetwise paintings build on precedents to conjure an impression of colliding voices, opinions and needs.”
— Roberta Smith, New York Times

Born in Greece and based in Los Angeles, Despina Stokou’s spirited paintings combine text, collage, charcoal, and oil paint. Through densely layered gestures, Stokou’s frenzied canvases reference art historical precedents such as Cy Twombly or Jean-Michel Basquiat. Building upon this history of expressive mark making, she is one of a group of artists firmly involved in re-thinking contemporary painting. Her work reacts with great immediacy to the speed of information consumption, visual and otherwise, exploring contemporary vernacular.

Stokou’s work has been included in exhibitions internationally at art spaces including KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Ibid Projects, Los Angeles, Krinzinger Projekte, Vienna, The Breeder, Athens, and many others. Her most recent solo show SHOUT was at Derek Eller Gallery in 2016.
