Dinh Q. Lê, ‘The Headless Buddhas of Angkor’, 2012, Shoshana Wayne Gallery

The Headless Buddhas of Angkor, 2012 were part of Lê’s Remnants, Ruins, Civilization, and Empire show exhibited at Shoshana Wayne Gallery in 2012. This work is also a continuation of the artist’s earlier Headless Buddha (1998). Here, Lê photographed the headless buddha statues in Angkor Wat. The statues are looted and the heads are sold to tourists and eventually to museums. The colorful sashes are placed around the torso’s of the Buddhas during the new year.
