Born 1962 in Bochum, Germany, Dirk Salz studied engineering at RWTH Aachen after High School Graduation. From 1979 to 1981 Salz attended private lessons in painting, drawing and art history. Influenced and trained by various artists, he initiated his own career as an artist in 2002. Since then, Salz has participated in numerous solo- and group exhibitions, as well as international art fairs.

Dirk Salz’ artworks are characterized by smooth surfaces and by their particular reflection properties. He achieves this effect by applying several layers of synthetic resins mixed with pigments. By doing so, he creates either opaque or, when finishing with a varnish coating, glossy surfaces. Due to the artwork’s smooth surface, they produce diffuse reflections of their surroundings. Salz’ central theme consists in the ambiguity between the materiality of the artwork and the viewer’s perception that varies according to light and perspective. Constantly allowing new approaches to his works, the viewer gradually develops a sense of their multi-layered complexity.
