About Dirk Skreber

Dirk Skreber's work mines the imagery of catastrophe and manhood, combining photorealist elements with more painterly and illustrational styles. Burned-out camper vans or disembodied wheels float in blood-splattered landscapes or watery graves, while cars wrap around poles in life-size sculptures of high-speed collisions, produced at automobile safety testing sites. His "pluck" paintings, derived from comic book images of women, employ horizontal bands of foam rubber tape that is stripped away so that the figures emerge out of the plucked strips.
