About Don Estes
The vibrant, striated paintings of Don Estes fuse the traditions of Color Field and abstract landscape painting. By layering skeins of acrylic, stain, pastel, and gesso, Estes creates textural, horizontal compositions suggestive of horizon lines, sunsets, and expansive seascapes. There is a sense of vibrating, transitory energy in the zip lines—reminiscent of Barnett Newman—that cut across the canvases. Individual mantles of the paint seem to be in a state of constant flux, enhanced by movement evidenced in areas of splattered ink and bleeding color.
