Antón was born in East Los Angeles and raised in Pico Rivera, California.

Antón received his Bachelor of Arts in 1978, a Master of Arts in 1980, at San Francisco State University, and was mentored by some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, including Duane Michals, Eikoh Hosoe,Brett Weston, Robert Heinecken, Edmund Teske,[7] Don Worth, Jack Welpott,[9] and during his earliest years with Dody Weston Thompson and the instrumental caring influence of Dan Vandevier.
He was awarded the Freestyle Crystal Apple Teaching Award in 2010 from the Society for Photographic Education, as well as the Excellence in Photographic Education - Teacher of the Year Award[13] from the CENTER[14] in 2002. He has also received recognition from the WESTAF/National Endowment for the Arts[15] Regional Fellowship for the Visual Arts in 1993, and support from the Lorser Feitelson / Helen Lundeburg Grant in 1984.
