Donald Bracken makes mixed-media paintings, sculptures, and installations through which he explores subjects such as the beauty of nature, human figures in landscapes, horses and dogs, and New York’s iconic World Trade Center, destroyed in 2001. His compositions focused on the Twin Towers are especially powerful, because Bracken, as part of a program administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, was an artist-in-residence there in 1997. During this period, he painted haunting views of the towers and the city skyline; after their demise, Bracken honored the structures in compositions featuring scorched and pummeled surfaces, incorporating ash and debris from Ground Zero itself. In his landscape paintings, Bracken also includes elements of the sites depicted. In his own words, he “started using limestone, sand, vines, and other natural materials” to create “textural three-dimensional landscapes emerging from their own organic origins.”
