Donald Harn, ‘Da Chin’, 2014, East Gallery

Da Chin (2014) is the latest work from Harn and it also finds its inspiration in the concepts and techniques of a Gather and Dismiss transformation. Here we see the figure of a Chinese woman in traditional Chin Dynasty costume. The delicacy of her headdress and clothing vividly portray the impression of a wealthy and ancient royal family. At the same time, Harn creates a moving contemporary expression. Leaving one side of the clothing unsculpted, pixel blocks come in and out of the form weaving the figure into the viewer’s space. Da Chin combines the elements of traditional form and a contemporary pixelated effect to build a transformative narrative. Inviting the viewer’s imagination and feelings to define the work.
