For 20 years, Doug DuBois has chronicled the intimate, fleeting moments of his own family, capturing their evolving dynamic filled with emotional trials and tribulation. Just after his graduation from Hampshire College and prior to beginning a graduate program at the San Francisco Art Institute, DuBois' father suffered a near-fatal accident when he fell from a commuter train. DuBois spent the summer with him and began to photograph his father's convalescence and the subsequent nervous breakdown of his mother. Through the years, DuBois has continued to document his parents and siblings in mundane yet palpably tense portraits, often occupying the fragile border of exploitation but enlisting the participation of his family, who willingly follow direction in composed, rarely candid narratives.
