About Dwayne Butcher

Dwayne Butcher, who is originally from Memphis, Tennessee, is a writer, artist, and curator based in Baltimore. Butcher is interested in digital translations of traditional art forms, and he centers his practice on his experience living in the American South, as well as the politics of bodies and gender identity. Through photographs, videos, and text-based projects such as the series “Daddy Missed My Birthday” (2015), the artist creates sardonic images that expand upon and subvert the stereotypes about his native region. Butcher’s practice also involves community-minded projects, including a blog that he ran for several years dedicated to the Memphis arts scene. His work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally, including in galleries in Paris, Helsinki, and Milan.
