Ekta Kaul is an award-winning designer-maker, artist and textile craft expert. Within her practice exploring contemporary expressions of stitch and print she creates embroidered cartographic quilts, and welcomes commissions for the same based on personal histories.
Her fascination with maps began as a child when growing up in India. She would spend hours drawing maps of places both real and imagined, drawn also by maps for their graphic quality and potential for story telling.
Kaul prefers to work with natural materials such as silks, cottons and slub linen sourced from fair trade cooperatives in her homeland India. This, her London Map, is embroidered on a textured ivory Eri silk which comes from the jungles of Assam, and the wall hanging’s monochrome palette and minimal appearance are informed by Western traditions.
The map is wall-mounted using two brackets and a rod which threads through a tunnel at the top of the work. There is then also a free hanging rod at the bottom to give weight and an even hang to the work. We provide a set of brackets, screws and pole, ready to be fixed to your wall.
It should be noted that the map illustrated can be customized (at extra cost). Places, architectural icons, routes and features of personal meaning can all be added with a colored thread to highlight them.
The pole is extendable. Measures: Length 110cm-200cms.
