About Elijah Gowin
Elijah Gowin produces photographs, often without the use of a camera, through which he explores social and religious rituals, the symbolic and emotional resonance of nature and landscapes, and memory. To make his works, Gowin collages photographs culled from online sources, transferring them to negatives, which he cuts by hand and scans. The resulting pictures are at once eerily familiar and visually confounding. Working in series, Gowin has created images of the sun, anonymous figures falling through the air and floating in water, and baptisms in lakes and seas.
