About Ellen Auerbach

Photographer Ellen Auerbach is best known for the innovative, experimental advertisements, still lifes, and studio portraits she produced during the heady years of the Weimar Republic in Germany. Educated in photography at the Bauhaus and influenced by Surrealism and Constructivism, Auerbach created offbeat, witty images with her friend Grete Stern, with whom she founded the commercial photography studio Ringl & Pit in Berlin. Upon Hitler’s rise, Auerbach escaped to Tel Aviv, London, and, finally, New York, traveling and taking photographs of the people and places she encountered.
