About Emerson Cooper

The anonymous artist Emerson Cooper has for many years posted sticker replicas of his work around New York City. Like street artist Shepard Fairey, Cooper distributes much of his work freely in public spaces. He also manipulates cabinet cards and photographs from late 19th-century America and Europe, using thread, ink, paint, and digital alteration to ornament these antique images. The artist has expressed a desire to “repair the universe,” alluding to his goal of celebrating the unknown people who are depicted in these little-seen photographs. Cooper’s collages are laced with spiritualism and magic, decorated with secret codes, and, sometimes, accompanied by captions like “HERO” or “song of love.”
