Eric Beltz Melds Myth and Mysticism in Other-Worldly Graphite Drawings
Eric Beltz’s surreal graphite drawings juxtapose religious and mythological symbolism, shamanism, and historical tableaux from the American Southwest. Research into cultural and religious history is central to his practice: “I am kind of a voracious researcher, maybe an obsessive too because when I find an interest I try to delve into it as deeply as possible,” he explains, “as my work develops I often return to my notes that I’ve taken from all of these different books to see if I can find something that I can respond to.” Beltz’s meticulous compositions point to the diverse cultural roots that make up contemporary life in the United States.
