About Eriks Apalais

Eriks Apalais produces paintings that fall between abstraction and representation, featuring non-narrative scenes taking place in ambiguous and unidentifiable settings. As he explains, “In my own work I try to create a reflection of internal memory processes.” Apalais is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg where he studied under Andreas Slominski, as well as maintained a correspondence with Janis Avotins that became instrumental in Apalais’s development as a painter. He also cites Gerhard Richter as an influence, and was deeply affected by Andrei Tarkovsy’s films and St. Augustine’s Confessions—both of which he has written about at length.
