From the Specialists:
Ethan Cook's woven canvases are contemporary in their minimalist focus on shape and color, while simultaneously harkening back to one of the most traditional art forms of weaving. For Cook, the surface of the canvas itself became the focus of his practice when he switched from surface media such as dye to the loom. In works like Untitled from 2014, the canvas is the creation itself, not just a surface to work on. As he explained of the shift in his practice, “in those [dye works] I was changing what the canvas actually was, this led me to the next logical step, which is how canvas is made. It made me want to explore weaving—so I took a weaving class and learned to make canvas."
