About the work
Ethan Russell
American, b. 1945
Follow

Best known for his work as the official photographer of The Rolling Stones US tour in 1969, Ethan Russell captures both the down-to-earth, human side and the bold, on-stage presence of iconic musicians. Primarily self-taught, Russell was drawn to photography’s ability to reveal true emotions. He favors unadulterated, candid moments that reveal musicians in relaxed, vulnerable states—Keith Richards eating cereal, Mick Jagger holding Charlie Watts’s daughter, and Bill Wyman and his girlfriend looking melancholic and bored. Russell shoots with the mindset of a wildlife photographer, seeking not to intrude. He photographed the cover of the final album by The Beatles, Let It Be (1970), making him one of the last three photographers to shoot all four band members together.
