About Evgenia Arbugaeva

Evgenia Arbugaeva’s photography captures images of the people and landscapes of the Arctic Circle, with both the sensitivity of a native and the objectivity of a photojournalist. Born in Tiksi, Russia, Arbugaeva is intimately familiar with the landscapes and people of the North. Her photographs infuse a sense of liveliness, wonder, and energy into the otherwise barren tundra. “It’s like a sheet of white paper, and when you’re in the emptiness, your mind begins to think in a different way,” Arbuegaeva has said. Her work relies on the region’s natural light and color, and phenomena such as the Northern Lights exist in her photographs not only as awe-inspiring spectacles, but also as part of the local imagination and mythology.
