Florian Schmidt, ‘Untitled (Proximity) 06’, 2016, Johannes Vogt Gallery

About Florian Schmidt

Florian Schmidt creates highly sculptural “paintings” using fundamental geometric shapes as building blocks. Exposing and emphasizing their underlying armatures, Schmidt covers these simple shapes with lacquer, silicon, vinyl, cardboard, and wires. In works like Untitled(Presence)9 (2010), the frame juts forward into the third dimension, barely containing shapes that begin on the canvas and explode into sculptural forms. Frequently recycling the scraps or ‘cut-offs’ from previous works, Schmidt’s assemblages smoothly progress from one to the other and highlight the act of their construction.
