About Formento & Formento
Husband and wife duo BJ and Richeille Formento create cinematic, quasi-anthropological photographs. The couple began collaborating in 2005, uniting BJ’s experience in fashion and street photography with Richeille’s background as a fashion designer and art director. Their photographs span diverse topics—from the town of Gary, Indiana, to geishas in Japan—exploring the cultural and aesthetic implications of place through staged environments and saturated colors. The couple’s transition away from fashion photography resulted from an impulse to document certain characteristics of different cultures. “We wanted to capture the peculiarity, even idiosyncrasy, of Japanese culture before it is diluted beyond recognition through the influence of modernity,” Richeille has said about their work in Japan.
