Francheska Alcantara, ‘Cuaba Gastropoda’, 2017, Bronx Museum of the Arts

Cuaba Gastropod is part of an ongoing exploration where Alcantara plays with jabon de cuaba, a type of soap from her childhood Dominican household. This soap is a quintessential item that has multifaceted uses ranging from washing clothes and treating infections to blocking leaks in propane gas tanks. The soap has been used as the go-to item for "feminine hygiene" and as a method to test for pregnancy. Jabon de cuaba is an expression of the Dominican way of life, where the imaginative and the contradictory make the extraordinary happen in the everyday.
