A sensitive observer of his life and surroundings, Frank Yamrus works in series to produce intimate, introspective photographs, creating suggestive visual narratives focused primarily on himself and his place in the world. Though he has addressed environmental issues in his lush, carefully composed photographic still lifes of flowers, blocks of ice, and plastic water bottles, he most frequently turns the camera on himself, and on the natural landscapes that were the sites of formative experiences and that serve as proxies for his emotions. Explaining that his “imagery is, and has always been, about process and not about resolution,” Yamrus leaves his open-ended images largely unexplained. In “I Feel Lucky” (2008), he marks the milestone of his 50th birthday with a poetic series of self-portraits, at once overt and ambiguous, conveying the pivotal experiences that shaped his identity.
