Hip Hop, Punk, and the Rise of Graffiti in 1980s New York
Framed: 34 x 43 1/4 inches.
As a teen, graffiti legend Futura 2000 was the young protégé of Haring and Basquiat, and even found himself on tour with The Clash, painting backdrops while the band played live. Making the challenging transition from graffiti artist to the conventional gallery world, Futura is understood as the progenitor of abstraction in graffiti art.
This artist-distressed work on paper depicts one of Futura’s ubiquitous characters, from the same Manga-inspired world that brought us his famed Pointman, as well as the cover art for “Psyence Fiction,” and “Never Never Land,” for the classic James Lavelle project Unkle. —Courtesy of Doyle
