Gabriel de la Mora is best known for his mixed-media drawings that layer human, synthetic, and animal hair into carefully constructed portraits and other representational works. De la Mora collects this hair from donors and other sources, storing it in an archive of crystal flasks that is nearly a work of art itself. Although grounded in line drawing, the hair gives the works an almost sculptural aspect, the artist’s practice as a whole playing on the tensions between line and three-dimensional form, figure and abstraction, the minimalist and the intricate.
