About Gabriele Beveridge

Gabriele Beveridge creates sculptural assemblages in which she stages found photographs and magazine cuttings amongst arrangements of eclectic materials—that have included crystals, marble slabs, and a eucalyptus log. Mining images from back issues of magazines and advertisements, Beveridge takes them out of context and places them in tactile, surreal compositions. In her installation Newly Laundered Smile I (2012), a sepia-toned image of a female model printed onto an old vinyl screen is framed and hinged to a wall, beneath which a row of cacti is suspended. “My work is a kind of estrangement of nostalgia, constructing environments or redundant imagery that construe something familiar and yet uncanny, removing the context with which they were originally associated.” Beveridge’s work has been compared to that of Alice Channer, Anthea Hamilton, and John Stezaker.
