This painting was a breakthrough piece for artist Gary Oakley. The original underpainting was heavy application of oil paint in horizontal lines. It was a beautiful abstract of lines over the top of which he applied landscape details. One can see the rusty red underpainting under the deep blue sky and hints of light purple behind the copper/dark purple mid section. Gestural, action brush strokes create powerful and energetic clouds that seem to erupt from the dark blue. The foreground has strong dashes of gold-pigmented paint which contrast the blue sky. Viewers see many landscape elements in this piece from canyons and hills to lakes and reflections. This oil painting is varnished with a finish that is not overly glossy so the depth comes through. It is ready to hang.
