About Ged Quinn
Interested in the way ideas and images travel through and become altered by time, Ged Quinn creates exquisitely detailed paintings that intertwine history and the present-day. While Quinn concentrated on photography and installation early in his career, an epiphany led him to eventually devote himself to painting, the medium through which he felt he could best express his fascination with history. He works by re-creating classical landscapes and still lifes, augmenting them with a riot of references and images drawn from art history, modern and contemporary art and popular culture, mythology, philosophy, and his own imagination. He once described one of his compositions as “a mash-up of Poussin and Claude Lorrain, with Star Wars thrown in.” Through his work, Quinn aims to give viewers pause and to demonstrate that our understanding of the past is always and inevitably shaped by our own time.
