About Gentleman's Game

Collaborators and friends Jason Douglas Griffin and Brandon Friend have known each other for more than a decade and have worked together since 2008 under the name Gentleman’s Game. The pair takes turns imprinting images with successive layers of mixed media. The duo began working together when they were neighbors at a studio building in Long Island City. “Similarly prevalent amongst musicians that work together, we found the artistic process exciting and opened the gates for ‘happy accidents’ that extended beyond just the material,” they explain. Together, their colorful, figurative images are evocative of a friendly aesthetic game that borders on dueling, full of jest, one-upmanship, and allusive imagery. Works such as their “Captains” series, which imagines portraits of unnamed captains composed of figurative scraps, gestural marks, and abstract patterning, yields a complicated web of art-historical and socio-political allusions.
