About Giorgio Cavallon

Giorgio Cavallon was an early Abstract Expressionist and co-founder of the famed American Abstract Artists group. With a lighter touch than many of his bolder, more gestural contemporaries, Cavallon brought a distinctively Italian sense for soft color and light to the rougher, gritty American abstract movement of the time. Painting rectangles of color in light layers of oils, Cavallon aimed at the creation of beautiful forms, rather than the expression of emotions or the revelation of a method. He was influenced by the work of Hans Hofmann and Charles Hawthorne.
