About Giovanni Frangi
Milanese painter Giovanni Frangi synthesizes the art historical traditions of landscape painting and abstract expressionism in his work. Classically trained in his hometown, Frangi uses oil paints, extracting their luminescent properties in a manner recalling Northern Renaissance paintings in spite of his abstract content. His paintings draw on nature as subject matter, distilling landscapes into their basic formal properties of line and color. Each of Frangi’s paintings orbits around a particular color scheme, which seems to conceptually capture the natural scenery that inspires him. Yet the defining element of his work is not nature itself, but the manipulation of color and oil paints as evidenced by each painterly gesture.
