Gisela Griffith, ‘Birch Bark Icon (Copper)’, 2017, Sunne Savage Gallery

Inspired by the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Gisela Griffith's series of birch bark icons takes our own desire for harmony with the natural world as its starting point-- they bring the wilds of New England indoors as newly glistening totems. Found on the forest floor as nature’s litterfall, birch defies cycles of natural decay making it an unexpectedly effective sculpture material. The copper leaf applied to the outer surface of the bark elevates but does not transform the original material, reflecting the potential for harmony between the man-made and natural worlds.
