Filmmaker and fashion photographer Glen Luchford’s use of light and pose evokes a cinematic feel—models seem caught in moments of action, transition, or deep thought. His work in the 1990s introduced a higher emphasis on spontaneity and realism to fashion photography. In 1995, Luchford collaborated with painter Jenny Saville in a series entitled “Closed Contact”. Inspired by the pain and violence of cosmetic surgery, the photographs confront viewers with grotesque distortions of the female body, variously squished and otherwise disfigured.
