Aboriginal Australian artist Gloria Petyarre is best known for her paintings of undulating abstract fields of lines, which variously reference leaves, grass, and traditional bodypaint. She has represented several stories from Aboriginal Dreamtime mythology, referring to origin story in which totemic spirits created the aboriginal world. Starting her career with batik painting on silk, Petyarre turned to working on canvas because of its greater capacity for experimentation with line and color. In her well-known “Leaves” works, she used a collection of rhythmically moving earth toned lines to representing the movement of leaves in the wind. Petyarre is both a member of the Utopia Women Batik’s Group and the niece of Australia’s most acclaimed indigenous artist, Emily Kngwarreye.
